10 Thoughts on Episode 2 of Insecure
If you haven't seen last Sunday's episode of Insecure don't read any further and shame on you for waiting so long. This post contains spoilers from episode 2's Hella Questions.
1. Malibu
I did notice in the premiere episode, the term, Malibu, was used often. Based on its use, I'm assuming it means, to swear. Is Malibu the new Bible? Was the term created exclusively for the show. Or is this really old and I'm late? Either way I'm feeling it, Malibu.
2. The "Should"
Molly's therapy session brought a small issue to light. When the therapist asks Molly, "Is there a way you think your life should go?" I answered for myself and said "heck yeah!" I guess, watching too many movies and tv shows programmed me to believe in this. Go to college, get a well paying job. Be a respectable young lady, get a good husband. You follow these rules and everything should work out. I now see that that's all BS. When you work hard in college and tack a degree or two on your belt of achievements and dominate at your job, you expect things to properly fall into place but when the formula doesn't work we can't hold on to that "everything should be fine" mantra, its not, so what the hell do we plan to do about it. Like Molly's therapist said, "If your shoulds didn't come to fruition, would you be open to your life looking a different way?"
3. These Girls Be Doin' Research
I think our researching skills should be certified. A small piece of information is all we need to paint the full picture. I'll end up on your cousin's husbands sisters best friends page trying to gather information about you (don't judge). Issa went from Instagram, to Facebook, to LinkedIn and ended up at the parking lot in front of the new girl's job. It be like that sometimes.
4. Too Soon Tasha, Too Soon.
Tasha, Tasha, Tasha. Lawerence literally just started taking you out in public, therefore, meeting the entire family is not next on the agenda. Slow your roll, you barely escaped rebound status. Despite this episode's ending, I'm not convinced the relationship will last. Tasha should start working on how she'll explain to grandma why she don't see that "handsome young man" anymore.
5. Overpopulation is a Bitch
Overpopulation in pubic schools are a huge problem (a wall is certainly not the solution), student to teacher ration is disproportioned and not enough attention is given to the students. I love how this season is addressing the issues with public schools. So far we see how the lack of attention to the school effects the faculty, I hope we see more of the students and how they are affected.
6. John Legend A** N****
Lawerence is not good at playing the field, which is a good thing. I really hope he doesn't change. He's a one woman kind-of-guy and shame on Chad for giving him flack for it. Can it be okay for a guy to be in touch with his feelings? I mean, feelings are not exclusive to women.
7. Black Girls Don't Like Hockey
I bet Molly thought sitting through a game of hockey and having meaningless conversations about lobster rolls, would get her the raise she wants but that obviously rendered zero results. Poor Molly. Maybe she needs to download that Glassdoor app and find someone who would appreciate her talents.
8. Can Black People Be Racist?
I'm not going to lie, I didn't see Vice Principal Gaines joke, about building a wall, as offensive. I actually thought it was a jab at Donald Trump. I know its been said that black people can't be racists, but boy oh boy did those racist alerts go off when he spoke to the Hispanic students. Do you think Issa has a responsibility to speak up?
9. Friends Help Friends Spy on Exes
Daydreaming about punching your ex boyfriend's new girl in the face is not going to solve anything but getting your best friend to pretend to bump into your ex will get you the answers you need. Shoutout to Molly, for putting in that extra work. Her research actually required travel. Molly is the real MVP, we all need a Molly (the friend, not the drug).
10. DAMN.
I did not expect Lawerence to say he was done. I must be in denial because I'm not buying it. How can you give five years and be done just like that? He should forgive her and let it go. If the shoe was on the other foot, she'd be expected to let it go too. However, Issa acting off of her emotions is not going to fill the hole in her heart. That DM is not going to make you feel better girl (It was hella bold though.)
